Inside the world of alt protein: Lessons from my career

Having worked in the alt protein & FoodTech industry, I've had the chance to team up with some of the most innovative and forward-thinking companies out there. We've developed new cultivated meat alternatives and explored the potential of cellular agriculture, AgriFood tech and fermentation. Along the way, I've learned so much about the challenges and opportunities of this fast-evolving industry.

In this blog, I'll share some of the most important lessons I've learned during my time working in an emerging biotech field. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a foodie, or simply curious about the future of food, I hope my experiences will inspire you to think differently about the role of sustainably-produced protein in our diets and our society. So join me on this journey, as we explore the fascinating world of alternative protein and the lessons it can teach us about innovation, sustainability, and the power of food to change the world.

Staying agile in a rapidly changing industry is the most important skill

The food industry is in the midst of a revolution, and the pace of change is faster than ever before. Over the past decade, exciting new products have been hitting the market, and we're seeing some of the first-ever tastings and sales of novel products. But with such rapid evolution comes the need for agility and flexibility in the industry. For anyone working in the alternative protein and FoodTech space, it's important to stay adaptable and pivot quickly when needed. Regulatory frameworks are still being developed, so it's crucial to stay informed and be ready to adapt as the landscape continues to shift. The key to success in this fast-changing industry is to be prepared for whatever comes your way, and to always stay one step ahead of the curve. The most innovative and effective people I’ve worked with are always the most flexible and open to change.

Mission-driven individuals drive progress and innovation

It's the mission-driven people who are driving the most impactful changes. They're the ones who are pushing the boundaries of what's possible and working tirelessly to bring new and innovative products to fruition. These individuals are not just motivated by profit or recognition; they're driven by a deep sense of purpose and a desire to create a better world. Whether they're entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, managers or activists, they share a common goal: to create a more sustainable and ethical food system. And it's this shared mission that keeps them going, even in the face of challenges and setbacks. Because when you're truly committed to a cause, you don't let anything stand in your way. You roll up your sleeves and take action, overcoming obstacles and finding creative solutions to drive progress forward. I meet people on a daily basis who resonate with their personal mission so deeply that they will do whatever it takes to make the changes they want to see in the world.

Overcoming criticism and staying focused on the bigger picture is an art

As with any new and innovative industry, alternative protein has faced its fair share of criticism and skepticism. Some have dismissed it as a passing fad, while others have questioned its sustainability, efficacy, and long-term viability. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that no matter what you do and with what intentions you do it with, there will always be negativity in your way, it’s inevitable. It helps to see it as an obstacle to overcome, but not let it dishearten you or distract you from the bigger vision. Most people I’ve met within the industry are optimists and they have high hopes, but they’re not delusional, you’ll find people are quite realistic. Accepting and coping with failure is something we’re all used to by the time we find a strategy that succeeds. Especially working at the mercy of biological systems, nothing ever works the first time.

The art of overcoming criticism is all about staying focused on the bigger picture and keeping your eye on the prize. It's about recognising that change is never easy, but that it's always worth fighting for. By staying true to your mission and staying committed to your goals, you can rise above the negativity and prove the skeptics wrong. As the alternative protein industry continues to grow and thrive, it's becoming increasingly clear that those who were once the naysayers are now the ones who are being left behind.

Every individual can play a part in the alternative protein movement

The beauty of the alternative protein & FoodTech movement is that there are many ways for individuals to get involved and make a meaningful impact. I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with people from all walks of life with different skillsets, and it has taught me that everyone has a place to help support new emerging technologies.

If you work in the field already, keep going! Your expertise and dedication are helping to drive the industry forward. But even if you're not a scientist or an entrepreneur, there are still ways you can contribute. If you're curious about the field, take the time to educate yourself and learn more about the technical side of things. By understanding the science behind alternative protein, you'll be better equipped to support and promote it. And if you're an investor, be diligent, support mission-driven talent and continue to provide the world with more sustainable businesses. Your financial support can help turn promising ideas into successful enterprises.

Finally, if you want to get involved in the alternative protein movement, don't be afraid to network and attend conferences and events. Connecting with like-minded individuals and learning from industry experts can help you find your niche and make a real difference in the world. Whatever your background or interests, there's a role for everyone to play in this exciting and rapidly evolving industry.

Sustainability is shaping the future of food

As we move further into the 21st century, it's becoming increasingly clear to me that sustainability is the key issue of our time. From climate change to resource depletion, our planet is facing a range of complex and interconnected challenges that demand urgent action. A social consciousness is developing around resource utilisation and waste reduction which is why sustainability has become the big focus of the 2020s.

I’ve worked now with many businesses, and everywhere I look people are talking about how we can create a more sustainable future, and how we can build a world that is both prosperous and equitable. In the food industry, this focus on sustainability is particularly prominent with large brands leading the way, releasing ‘greener’ products. There’s no doubt that consumers are becoming more conscious about the impact of our food choices on the planet. Companies are under increasing pressure to adopt more sustainable practices and offer more sustainable products. As the focus on sustainability continues to grow, I’m certain that it will remain at the top of everyone's priority list for years to come.
